Greenwashing and ESG Reporting Challenges: Building Investor Trust in Sustainability

In recent years, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors have become integral to investment strategies, as companies and investors alike recognize the importance of sustainability in driving long-term value. Yet, even as ESG data usage surges, a significant trust deficit looms over the landscape of corporate sustainability reporting. According to EY’s 2024 Institutional Investor Survey, 85% of investors highlight greenwashing—misleading claims about sustainability—as an escalating problem. This growing skepticism underscores the critical need for improved transparency, accuracy, and comparability in ESG reporting.

The Rising Use of ESG Data Amid Growing Distrust

The survey, which gathered insights from 350 global investment decision-makers, revealed a paradox. While 88% of respondents reported increasing their reliance on ESG data over the past year, many expressed reservations about the reliability of this information. Concerns over the accuracy, materiality, and comparability of sustainability reporting were widespread, with 80% of investors identifying these areas as requiring urgent improvement.

This lack of trust in ESG data has tangible consequences. Nearly two-thirds of investors indicated that their firms might reduce their reliance on ESG factors, citing shifts in the business cycle and short-term market dynamics as key drivers. Yet, paradoxically, demand for sustainable investment products continues to grow, with 74% of asset managers reporting heightened client interest in ESG-related offerings.

Balancing Short-Term Pressures and Long-Term Sustainability Goals

The survey findings also highlight the tension between short-term priorities and long-term sustainability imperatives. Investors overwhelmingly agreed (92%) that the risk to near-term performance often outweighs the long-term benefits of ESG investments. This focus on immediate returns has relegated climate change to the second tier of strategic considerations, with 55% citing it as a significant factor in shaping investment strategies. Regional differences further complicate the landscape, as investors in North America and Europe are more likely to prioritize climate change than their counterparts in other regions.

Regulatory Frameworks and Investor Adaptation

Upcoming regulatory frameworks, such as the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the IFRS Foundation’s ISSB standards, aim to bridge the trust gap in sustainability reporting. However, the survey indicates mixed sentiments about these new standards. Only 34% of respondents believe the CSRD standards are clearly articulated, although 65% and 68% view the CSRD and ISSB frameworks, respectively, as conducive to long-term investment decision-making.

Recognizing the importance of these new regulations, investors are actively upskilling their teams and upgrading their systems. Over half (56%) are seeking candidates with ISSB or CSRD expertise, while others are investing in training (49%) and advanced data management systems (45%) tailored to these standards.

Closing the "Say-Do" Gap

The disconnect between investors’ stated commitment to sustainability and their actual investment behaviors—referred to in the report as the “say-do gap”—emphasizes the need for alignment between rhetoric and action. As Dr. Matthew Bell and Velislava Ivanova from EY note, closing this gap is crucial for directing capital towards impactful projects and redefining sustainability as both a value driver and a risk mitigator.
