IFRS Foundation Releases New Guidance on Climate-First Approach to Sustainability Reporting

The International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Foundation released a comprehensive guide to assist companies in initiating their sustainability reporting with a focus solely on climate-related disclosures. This guidance is particularly relevant for organizations adopting the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards, specifically IFRS S1 and IFRS S2.

Background on IFRS S1 and S2

In June 2023, the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), under the IFRS Foundation, introduced two significant standards:

  • IFRS S1: This standard provides general requirements for disclosing sustainability-related financial information.
  • IFRS S2: This standard offers specific guidelines for climate-related disclosures.

Recognizing the challenges companies might face concerning data availability and preparedness, the ISSB incorporated a “climate-first” transition relief. This provision allows companies, in their initial year of applying these standards, to concentrate exclusively on climate-related disclosures as outlined in IFRS S2, deferring other sustainability topics to subsequent years.

Key Highlights of the New Guidance

The newly published guide elucidates the application of IFRS S1 when a company opts to report solely on climate-related risks and opportunities in line with IFRS S2. It emphasizes that while the scope of reporting is temporarily narrowed to climate-related aspects, companies are still required to adhere to all pertinent requirements of IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 to assert compliance.

The guide covers essential topics such as materiality considerations, metrics and targets, sources of guidance for identifying climate-related risks and opportunities, and the importance of disclosing judgments made during the preparation of climate-related disclosures.

Implications for Companies

This initiative underscores the IFRS Foundation’s commitment to facilitating the effective implementation of ISSB Standards, ensuring that companies can provide investors with decision-useful information regarding sustainability-related risks and opportunities.

For a detailed understanding, companies and stakeholders are encouraged to consult the full guide available on the IFRS website.

Aligning with Global Sustainability Reporting Trends

This development aligns with the broader movement towards standardized sustainability reporting, reflecting the increasing demand from investors and stakeholders for transparent and comparable information on how companies are addressing climate-related challenges.

As the global business environment continues to evolve, staying informed and compliant with these standards will be crucial for companies aiming to maintain investor confidence and uphold their commitment to sustainability.
